How did patient hear about the Grand Pavilion?: Received a list of potential Rehab Facilities from the Social Workers in the Hospital and due to good recommendation and our great reviews she choose to come to the Grand Pavilion.
Ms. Mary Mays was admitted to The Grand Pavilion from Mercy Medical Center on June 25th, 2018. Ms. Mays had experienced a malignant neoplasm, unspecified intestinal obstruction, and generalized muscle weakness. Upon arrival to The Grand Pavilion, Ms. Mays and her family were greeted by both the nursing team and our concierge, Mark, and then went on to meet with our rehabilitation team, dietician and social worker. The entire team were excited to get to know Ms. Mays. She is an extremely enthusiastic and personable person. Although upon admission she was not in the best of shape and was suffering from a very unpleasant diagnosis, she came to The Grand Pavilion with the hopeful goal of rehabilitating and returning home safely.
Prior to being admitted to the hospital, Ms. Mays lived independently in a four-family house in Freeport. She was married to her late husband for 56 years. They shared a loving and compassionate marriage. She would always share fond memories of her late husband. Ms. Mays was a big participator in our therapeutic recreation programs. She loved attending the musical programs and would love joining the social programs where she could interact and have a pleasant conversation with her fellow residents. Ms. Mays served as a registered nurse for 46 years and she enjoyed acting on her passion for helping people. She retired in Mercy Hospital in 1999. Ms. Mays enjoys hobbies such as sewing, reading, and she enjoys following sports. Her favorite teams are the New York Yankees and the New England Patriots. Overall, she has a strong passion for helping and spending time with people.
Following Ms. Mays’s hospitalization, she was admitted to The Grand Pavilion for rehabilitation, and during initial evaluation, Ms. Mays presented to the rehabilitation team with a significant decrease in strength, decrease in functional mobility, impaired balance, difficulty performing bed mobility and transfers and her diagnosis was preventing her from performing standing activities as well as reducing her functional activity tolerance. Ms. Mays required total dependence with activities of daily living (ADL’s), such as self-feeding, dressing, hygiene and grooming. Ms. Mays also required total dependence to sit up from the edge of the bed, as she was unable to maintain static sitting balance independently and would require a Hoyer lift to get out of bed to her wheelchair. Prior to the hospitalization, Ms. Mays was independent with all her activities of daily living and was ambulating in the community independently without any assistive device.
The goal of occupational therapy was to increase Ms. Mays’ independence with self-feeding and improved sitting tolerance in her wheelchair. Techniques that were used to achieve her occupational functional goal included neuromuscular re-education with goal specific tasks during treatment sessions. Ms. Mays participated in therapeutic graded exercises, bicep and tricep curls, exercises with a gymnastic ball, proprioceptive techniques, while at the same time participating in strengthening activities and dynamic functional activities in physical therapy. Ms. Mays had made significant progress during her time spent in her skilled rehabilitation sessions. Ms. Mays began to tolerate standing for up to 10 minutes with the assistance of one person. With the improvement in her dynamic balance and standing tolerance, Ms. Mays was able to ambulate up to 100 feet with a rolling walker under moderate assistance of one team member. She currently requires set up assistance with self-feeding compared to total dependence during her initial evaluation in occupational therapy. Ms. Mays was upbeat and motivated throughout the entire journey.
When our Director of Concierge Services met with Ms. Mays as her discharge date was drawing near, she was full of appreciation. She expressed how the nursing staff were so responsive to her every need. Although she was overwhelmed with appreciation towards the nursing team she shared an even greater appreciation towards the Therapy team as they truly pushed her and motivated her to get stronger. Ms. Mays expressed how each and every day she would enjoy the camaraderie in the rehabilitation gym as the therapists helped her towards her goal of getting independent once again. She expressed her appreciation for the entire Grand Pavilion team. We are glad that we were able to walk Ms. Mays through the journey of rehabilitating.
